The Galaxy A42 5G is a big phone with a big battery: a 6.6-inch screen, a 5000 mAh battery and a 5G modem that gets more out of newer mobile networks. It suits someone who watches a lot, listens to podcasts on the move and doesn't want to hunt for a charger every evening.

What can the Galaxy A42 5G do?

The Super AMOLED screen is roomy and has deep blacks, but the resolution is HD+, or 720 × 1600 pixels, at a 60 Hz refresh rate. For films and social media that looks fine, but with small text up close you can see it's less sharp than on Full HD+ phones. A single speaker handles the sound.

The body has a plastic back and frame, with glass covering the front. The manufacturer didn't give it an IP water-resistance rating. The fingerprint reader is optical and sits under the display. The NFC module supports contactless payments; this model has no eSIM.

Processor, cameras and battery

Inside is a Snapdragon 750G, and in Poland it was sold with 4 GB of RAM. The processor has power to spare for browsing, messaging apps, YouTube and less demanding games. With heavier titles and lots of apps open, the RAM becomes the bottleneck. On the back there are four lenses: a 48 MP main camera, an 8 MP ultra-wide, a 5 MP macro and a 5 MP depth sensor. The front camera is 20 MP.

The 5000 mAh battery is this model's biggest asset – with typical use it easily lasts the whole day. Wired charging runs at 15 W, so a full charge takes a long time. There's no wireless charging.

What should you look out for before buying?

The 3.5 mm headphone jack is there. The memory card slot, however, is hybrid: you can fit either a second SIM or a microSD card. Keep the HD+ resolution in mind too – if a really sharp picture matters to you, this screen may disappoint.

Samsung stopped updating the Galaxy A42 5G in 2024: the last patch arrived in June or July, depending on the country, and in December the model dropped off the list of supported devices. The European version got two major updates, up to Android 12. With no new security patches, some apps, banking ones in particular, may refuse to cooperate over time. The phone still makes sense as a backup, for a child, for an older person, or for navigation and media. The Galaxy A52 5G offers a Full HD+ 120 Hz screen and an IP67 rating.
