Samsung Galaxy XCover Series used and refurbished

Galaxy XCover is the Samsung smartphone series where you can swap the battery yourself – on every model in this category, you just take off the back cover. The line has been around since 2011, and although the first model was marketed as a phone for active people, the XCover gradually became a work tool: for warehouse staff, couriers, service crews and companies that buy phones in bulk. It also looks more ordinary than a typical "rugged" smartphone.

In this category you'll find used and refurbished Samsung Galaxy XCover smartphones – four models: the Galaxy XCover 3, XCover 4, XCover Pro and XCover 5. SWOPiFY partners technically check every unit and repair the ones that need it before they go on sale.

Which Galaxy XCover models will you find in this category?

Samsung called the 2021 XCover 5 its most compact rugged phone: a 5.3-inch screen, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage and a removable 3000 mAh battery. It's IP68-rated and MIL-STD-810H certified, and according to the manufacturer it survives a drop from 1.5 metres. It also has one programmable XCover key, which you can assign to the torch, a barcode scanner or push-to-talk. The screen responds to touch even when you're wearing gloves.

The XCover Pro from 2020 is bigger – 6.3 inches in Full HD+ – and has a 4050 mAh battery, also removable. It got two programmable keys, a glove mode and wet-screen support, plus IP68 and MIL-STD-810G. Samsung also showcased it as a phone for taking contactless payments without a separate terminal.

The older XCover 4 (5 inches, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB) and XCover 3 (4.5 inches, 1.5 GB RAM, 8 GB) also have removable batteries. The XCover 4 meets IP68 and MIL-STD-810G, the XCover 3 IP67 and MIL-STD-810G. Both have a microSD card slot.

Why consider a refurbished XCover?

A refurbished Galaxy XCover is cheaper than a new unit of the same model – and with a phone that ends up on a warehouse floor or in the back of a delivery van, that matters. If you're buying several for a team, the saving multiplies by the number of staff.

The removable battery also changes the maths on lifespan. In a regular smartphone, a worn-out battery often ends the career of the whole device. Here you put in a new one and carry on working. That won't make you an eco hero, but the hardware doesn't get scrapped because of one part.

What should you check before buying?

XCovers are built to last for years, but the software has its expiry date. The XCover 3 stopped at Android 5, the XCover 4 at Android 9, the XCover Pro at Android 13. The XCover 5 got its last major update to Android 14. For its Enterprise Edition, Samsung promised up to five years of security patches from its launch in March 2021, and that period has now passed. The Enterprise Edition is, by the way, a separate variant for businesses, with the Knox suite – not every XCover is one. As a company scanner or walkie-talkie, an older XCover still does the job. For mobile payments and banking logins, the XCover 5 is the better pick.

You can filter the XCovers in this category by:

  • storage – from 8 GB on the XCover 3 to 64 GB on the XCover Pro and XCover 5;
  • RAM – from 1.5 GB to 4 GB;
  • colour;
  • price range;
  • condition.

The XCover 5 fits better in work trouser pockets. If you read job sheets, maps or documents on your phone, the XCover Pro's bigger screen will be more comfortable. Whichever you choose, it's worth having a spare battery.

What does the technical check involve?

The checklist has 44 points, and for XCovers it also covers parts that regular smartphones don't have. The checks include, among other things:

  • the battery – health, the state of the contacts and the compartment cover;
  • the screen – touch sensitivity, including in glove mode;
  • the programmable XCover keys;
  • the fingerprint reader and face recognition on models that have them;
  • the cameras, front and rear;
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC;
  • SIM and microSD card reading;
  • microphone, speaker and headphone jack.

The checks are done by SWOPiFY partners, chosen through a multi-stage process. They decide whether a phone needs repairing before it goes back on sale.

Can you trust refurbished Galaxy XCover smartphones?

Refurbished Samsung Galaxy XCover phones are used phones. They aren't new, and we never suggest otherwise anywhere. Each unit is assigned a condition grade – Premium, Very good, Good or Fair – with separate thresholds for the casing and the battery.

You buy with a warranty. With a work phone, that's real protection, because a breakdown in the middle of a shift can cost more than the phone itself.
