What can the Galaxy A71 do?

The Super AMOLED Plus screen has Full HD+ resolution and a 60 Hz refresh rate. Blacks are true, colours are vivid, and the tall 20:9 aspect ratio suits long chats and reading articles. There's one speaker, on the bottom edge. For films it's more comfortable to reach for headphones, especially as the 3.5 mm jack is still there.

Gorilla Glass 3 protects only the front, while the frame and back are made of plastic. The model has no water-resistance rating. You unlock it by placing your finger on the screen, as the optical reader sits under the display. The European version has NFC, so contactless payments with the phone work.

Processor, cameras and battery

Inside are the Snapdragon 730 and 6 GB of RAM (in some markets there was also an 8 GB version). With messaging apps, YouTube, navigation and photos, the phone still does a decent job. In newer games and heavy apps its age is starting to show. On the back Samsung fitted four cameras: a 64 MP main camera, a 12 MP ultra-wide, a 5 MP macro and a 5 MP depth sensor. The camera in the screen is 32 MP and even records in 4K.

The battery is 4500 mAh and lasts until the evening with average use. You charge it over USB-C at 25 W. The Galaxy A71 doesn't support wireless charging.

What should you check before buying?

A big plus is the separate microSD slot – in the dual SIM version, two SIM cards and a memory card fit at the same time. There's a headphone jack too. The weaker points are the 60 Hz screen, the lack of water resistance and the single speaker.

The Galaxy A71 got three major updates, all the way to Android 13 with One UI 5. Samsung ended its support in March 2024, removing it from the list of devices receiving security patches. Since then new vulnerabilities haven't been fixed, and banking apps may eventually refuse to work. It's sensible to treat it as a phone for basic tasks, a backup, or one for a child or an older relative. The newer Galaxy A72 already has a 90 Hz screen, an IP67 rating and a telephoto lens with 3x zoom.
