The Galaxy Z Flip3 went on sale in August 2021 at a noticeably lower launch price than the Z Flip 5G a year earlier. Along the way it got everything its predecessors lacked: water protection, a smooth screen and a bigger display on the lid. It was the first Flip you could recommend without a long list of caveats.

What can the Galaxy Z Flip3 do?

The cover screen grew to 1.9 inches. It shows the content of notifications, and a swipe brings up widgets: the music player, weather, voice recorder or quick settings. You can also take a selfie with the main camera from the lid, with a preview on the small screen. Full apps won't run here, though.

The inner Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen is 6.7 inches, with a resolution of 2640 × 1080 and a 120 Hz refresh rate. Inside is a Snapdragon 888 – there was no Exynos version in Europe – with 8 GB of RAM. The cameras are two 12 MP lenses on the back, a main camera with optical stabilisation and an ultra-wide, plus a 10 MP front camera. The battery is 3300 mAh, with 15 W wired, 10 W wireless and 4.5 W reverse charging. The frame is made of Armor Aluminum, Gorilla Glass Victus protects the back and the lid, and the body is rated IPX8. The phone weighs 183 g and was the first Flip with stereo speakers.

Flip3 or Z Flip 5G? Or maybe the Flip4?

Compared with the 2020 Z Flip 5G, the leap is big: 120 Hz instead of a standard refresh rate, a 1.9-inch lid screen instead of 1.1 inches, IPX8 instead of no water resistance at all, and a slightly smaller body. Battery capacity and cameras stayed the same. The older model only tempts on price, and its support ended two years earlier.

The 2022 Flip4 looks almost identical but has a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, a 3700 mAh battery and 25 W charging. Samsung still releases quarterly security patches for it, announced until 2027. If battery life and updates matter to you, paying extra for the Flip4 makes sense. A large cover screen that can run some apps only arrived with the Flip5.

Why consider a refurbished Flip3?

A refurbished Galaxy Z Flip3 costs noticeably less than a new foldable, and it's the oldest Flip that will survive the rain and has a 120 Hz screen. You get a former flagship that fits in a small jacket pocket when folded.

A foldable contains more components than a classic smartphone, so keeping it running longer counts double. It's not a green gesture in the full sense, but a working phone doesn't end up as e-waste before its time.

What should you look out for with the Galaxy Z Flip3?

The Flip3 got four major updates, from Android 11 to Android 15 with One UI 7. In August 2026, five years after launch, the last security patch arrived, and in September Samsung removed the model from its list of supported devices. There will be no new patches.

Leave the factory film on the inner screen alone. Samsung warns that removing it yourself can permanently damage the display, and replacement should be done by a service centre. The crease in the middle is visible at an angle. IPX8 protects against water but not dust, so sand in the hinge is still a risk. A 3300 mAh battery paired with a 120 Hz screen isn't known for stamina, and after a few years it loses capacity – check what the condition grade assumes.
