The Galaxy A40 is a smartphone you can easily use with one hand. The screen is 5.9 inches, the phone weighs around 140 grams, and the fingerprint reader sits on the back, exactly where your index finger rests. Among today's ever-bigger phones that's a rarity, and a good reason to take an interest in it.

At SWOPiFY you'll find used and refurbished Samsung Galaxy A40 phones in the 64 GB version, in black, blue, white and coral – both dual-SIM and in a single-slot variant. SWOPiFY partners check every unit technically before it's listed, and units with faults are repaired at a repair centre first.

What can the Galaxy A40 do?

A small screen doesn't mean a poor picture here. The Super AMOLED panel has Full HD+ resolution, so text is sharp and black is truly black, which you'll appreciate when reading in the evening. The refresh rate is the standard 60 Hz. Sound comes from a single speaker, good enough for speakerphone calls and short clips.

The back and frame are plastic, and the front is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. The body has no water-resistance rating, so it's best kept away from taps and swimming pools. The European version has an NFC module, so you can pay with your phone in shops once you've added your card to Google Wallet.

Processor, cameras and battery

The phone is powered by an Exynos 7904 backed by 4 GB of RAM. That combination comfortably handles WhatsApp, Messenger, email, maps and internet radio. With 3D games and lots of apps open at once, though, it starts to slow down – this is a phone for simple everyday tasks. On the back you'll find a 16 MP main camera and a 5 MP ultra-wide that fits the whole family or an entire building façade into the frame. The front camera is a whole 25 MP.

The battery has a capacity of 3100 mAh. With moderate use it lasts a day, but for long navigation sessions or streaming it's worth keeping a charger handy. Charging via USB-C runs at 15 W; there's no wireless charging.

What should you look out for before buying?

Good news for fans of cables: the Galaxy A40 has a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a dedicated microSD slot that doesn't take the second SIM's place. The built-in storage is the slower eMMC type, so installing apps or opening the gallery takes a little longer than on newer models.

The most important thing is the software. The Galaxy A40's run of updates ended at Android 11, and Samsung released its last security patch for it in March 2023. Some apps, including banking ones, may stop working on such an old system over time. So it's best suited to being a backup phone, a child's first smartphone or a simple phone for calls for an older person. If a newer system matters to you, the Galaxy A41 made it to Android 12 and has an under-display reader.

You can filter Galaxy A40 phones by:

  • storage – 64 GB;
  • RAM – 4 GB;
  • colour;
  • price range;
  • condition.

Look out for “1 SIM” in the listing name. If you use two numbers, choose a version without it, and move your photos to a microSD card – 64 GB fills up quickly.

What does the technical check involve?

Before a Galaxy A40 goes on sale as refurbished, it goes through a 44-point checklist, including:

  • screen – touch response, brightness, dead pixels, the condition of the glass;
  • battery – health and any deformation;
  • the front camera and both rear cameras;
  • the fingerprint reader on the back;
  • connectivity – Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC;
  • SIM and microSD detection;
  • speaker, microphones, headphone jack and USB-C port.

Can you trust a refurbished Galaxy A40?

A refurbished Samsung Galaxy A40 from SWOPiFY is a used phone, inspected by SWOPiFY partners and repaired where needed. We don't pretend it's new and never suggest that it is.

Every purchase comes with a warranty. The condition of the casing and battery is described by one of four grades: Premium, Excellent, Good or Fair. So before you order, you know whether you'll get a phone with barely any marks or a cheaper unit with visible scratches.
