Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 used and refurbished

The Galaxy Z Flip4 is the last Flip with a small, 1.9-inch screen on the lid. A year later Samsung gave its successor a screen with almost twice the diagonal, and plenty of people skipped this generation. That's a shame, because the battery, cameras and charging on the Flip4 are the same as on the Flip5.

What can the Galaxy Z Flip4 do?

Samsung unveiled it in August 2022. Open it up and you have a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Closed, the phone is 15.9–17.1 mm thick, because a narrow gap remains between the halves at the hinge. The cover screen is 1.9 inches. On it you can see the time and notifications, take a call, send a quick reply to a message, switch between widgets and take a photo with the rear camera, previewing it on the lid.

Inside is a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 – the same in every version, including the European one – with 8 GB of RAM. On the back there are two 12 MP cameras: a main camera with optical stabilisation and an ultra-wide. Selfies are handled by a 10 MP camera in the inner screen. The 3700 mAh battery charges at 25 W wired or 15 W wireless. The frame is Armor Aluminum and the body is rated IPX8, meaning it can survive immersion in fresh water to 1.5 m for 30 minutes.

The Flip4 compared with the Flip3 and Flip5

Compared with the 2021 Flip3, the changes are mostly the ones you can't see:

• a 3700 mAh battery instead of 3300 mAh;
• 25 W wired charging instead of 15 W, and 15 W wireless instead of 10 W;
• a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 instead of the Snapdragon 888;
• a 512 GB version, which the Flip3 didn't have.

The screens have the same diagonals. The Flip5 costs more and in return gives you a 3.4-inch cover screen, a hinge that closes flat and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. If you mainly use the lid to check the time and notifications, the Flip4 will do. Paying extra makes sense if you want to type and navigate without opening the phone, or if longer support matters to you.

Why consider a refurbished Flip4?

A refurbished Galaxy Z Flip4 costs less than the newer Flips, yet its inner screen, cameras and battery match the Flip5. You can put the money you save towards the 256 GB or 512 GB version. There's no microSD slot, so you choose your capacity once.

A four-year-old phone that still works doesn't need to go for recycling. When it goes back into someone's daily use, nobody has to make another one. That doesn't make the purchase fully green, but it makes better use of hardware that already exists.

What should you look out for with the Flip4?

Start with updates. One UI 8 with Android 16 was the last major system update for this model. In autumn 2026 Samsung moved it from monthly to quarterly security patches and has announced them until 2027. The phone works normally, but it won't get new One UI features any more.

The inner screen has a factory-fitted protective film. Don't remove it yourself – if it starts to peel, have it replaced by a service centre. The crease at the fold is part of the design. Check that the hinge holds the phone at various angles and closes evenly. After a few years the battery has a fair number of cycles behind it, so read its condition in the description. Crumbs get in more easily through the gap at the hinge, and IPX8 doesn't protect against dust, so on the beach keep the phone in a closed bag. To get the full 25 W, you'll need a USB-C charger that supports PD with PPS.
